Sewerage and roads

Engineering firm Goegebeur first drew up the project, after which Devagro took over. To guarantee efficient sewerage, a separate sewage system was installed. In addition, the subdivision was given two central buffer basins to buffer rainwater as much as possible. The construction of the roadway was done in three steps: an underpinning in mixed rubble, above that a stable foundation, and finally a washed-out concrete pavement.

Ecological bike lanes

The pinnacle of this project, is the green, ecologically responsible concrete that Devagro used to construct part of the bike paths. This initiative came about after a brainstorming session with the WVI where the concept of circularity was central. It was the perfect opportunity for Devagro to jump on the green bandwagon. As an alternative to the traditional road concrete 42.5 MPA with air entainer, a green concrete 50 MPA without air entainer was used for the construction of the bicycle paths.

Recycled granules

Green concrete, what exactly does it consist of? The answer is simple: a number of natural aggregates of concrete are replaced by its recycled version, which provides a CO2 reduction.

Specifically, it involves three raw materials:

  • the coarse aggregate consists of natural “rock“. In green concrete, however, 50% of this raw material is replaced by high-quality recycled concrete aggregate.
  • cement is responsible for 8% of total CO2 emissions worldwide. Devagro replaced 45% of the cement with blast furnace slag, a waste product from the metal industry making the concrete more environmentally friendly.
  • concrete crushed sand, a recycled concrete granulate replaced 30% of the natural sand fraction of concrete.

Thanks to these interventions, the CO2 emissions reduced by 50% compared to traditional concrete and saved WVI tons of raw materials. At the same time, quality was maintained and the project was delivered within budget.

Through this project, we are another step closer to a greener and sustainable planet. Devagro is proud to be part of this ambitious assignment.
